I haven't been close to KC in a dozen years, Joe, but I hear the renovations made a great park even better. I love the photos attached to your essay--that old scoreboard hasn't been gone long, but it already looks absolutely ancient!

So much has been done with Kauffman Stadium since this game -- most notably, the quarter-billion-dollar renovation that was completed in 2009. I've always said that my very favorite feature at any ballpark is the set of fountains in the outfield at Kauffman (after all, Kansas City is the "City of Fountains"). With the renovations, fans can now walk right in front of (and behind) those fountains. Definitely something that a fan should experience. Also, the renovations included the creation of the Royals Hall Of Fame, which is without question one of the top two or three at any MLB park.

Paul's observation about the niceness of the fans in KC is absolutely correct. The politeness and helpfulness also extends to the staff at Kauffman, leading me to write an article declaring this park to be the friendliest place in baseball: http://www.baseballparks.com/KC-friendly.asp
